Frequently asked questions

If your web-site will need more than a couple of pages then consider our bespoke website design service.

A web-site is like your office or factory building - you can start off in a garage or portacabin and move on eventually to perfect custom built premises on a green-field site.  And just like your offices, your website should reflect and enhance your corporate identity.

Consider what you want your web-site to do for you. Do you want...

  • a brochure: an on-line advertisement to tell the world what you can do.
  • an on-line catalogue: all the details but you don't actually take orders over the internet.
  • e-commerce: taking orders and payment via your web-site.
  • a support site for existing clients: frequently asked questions, downloads, a user group or forum.
  • news and updates: keep your clients informed about new developments and events.

Organisation and structure

The more information you want to show, the more carefully organised your site must be - a cluttered home page usually means confused visitors!  We can advise you on structure, navigation menus, and the techniques that are available to show your visitors where they are and how to get quickly to the information they want.

Target audience

You should also consider who you want to look at your site.  Most business users will go elsewhere quickly if you bombard them with noises or needless animations, tho if your site is aimed at young teenagers then lights and music may be appropriate.

What next

It is impossible to cover all the possibilities for a custom designed website and this page has just a few examples of what can be done.  If you have in mind something that isn't covered here just ask...  email or call Mike on 0114 251 0261 to discuss your requirements.

Photography

There's nothing like a few photographs to help get your message across and Abbeydale's fully equipped professional photographer specialises in digital image processing for internet use.  We can provide a 'one stop shop' for websites needing photography.

Of course if you have good quality photographs already then these will save time and money. We can accept most digital formats and can scan prints, negatives or slides.

E-commerce

E-commerce, selling directly from a web-site, is one of the fastest growing areas of the internet and Abbeydale Associates can provide e-commerce sites whether or not you currently accept credit card payments.  Most banks provide website payment processing for merchant account holders while Netbanx and others provide a bureau service for those without.  Natwest's Fastpay and eBay's PayPal systems provide very flexible and easy to use facilities for small businesses and individuals.  The latter two allow you to start small with e-commerce, perhaps selling part of your range online and introducing other items as and when.

Databases and web applications

Websites that provide membership facilities, restricted pages, or allow visitors to upload information (eg. forums or message boards), are generally backed by an online 'database'.  E-commerce sites come into this category too.  Abbeydale can provide database and custom programming for such features as guest books, uploadable advertisements (a la ebay!), user logins, online bookings etc.

Protection

As soon as you put your email address on a web site you will start to get 'spam' - unwanted and often offensive emails.  Unscrupulous organisations use web programs to 'harvest' email addresses from web sites.  At Abbeydale we take care to conceal your email address in the site's HTML code so it is visible to humans but not to harvesting software.  We can also take steps to protect your intellectual property by making it difficult to copy photographs from your web site.
